Pumpkin carving is annoying.
Yes, it’s a fun tradition, and the kids love it. And yes, it’s fun because Daddy makes silly noises as part of our yearly fun – when he pulls out the seeds he loves to pretend he’s shoving it in their little faces.
And I wouldn’t give it up.
But the carving part is hard! And we are no artists, believe you me.
But last year – it was our best year yet. Because we came up with an ingenious new trick to take pumpkin carving to a whole new level.
And because I’m just so nice, I thought I’d share my tips with you. Because what kind of friend lets other friends carve their pumpkin without making it easier on them? The tricky part of Halloween shouldn’t be the carving – we save that for when we go door to door for treats!
Instead of using knives or another carving apparatus, we simply took a hammer to them. Yep, we took cookie cutters, placed them right where we wanted them, and hammered away until the popped right through the pumpkin and into the center.
I do have a disclaimer – we still used a knife for the top. I’m not sure how else we’d get in there. But once the seeds were scooped out, the cookie cutter/hammer combo was the easiest peasiest thing we’ve ever done when it comes to Halloween prep.
If you’re like me, and you’re sick of sloppy and messy jack o’lanterns, try cookie cutters this year! I guarantee you’ll be thrilled with your result.
My sweet friend Mel bought me a better, more Halloweenish set of cutters for this year’s attempt. We can’t wait to try them out!
